“The Psychology of Hate”

I feel compelled to write about one ofthe most overused words of the last decade and so. The word hate. My American Heritage Dictionary simply defines the word as intense animosity or hostility. But where does this amimosity or hostility come from? In the early 90’s, the Notorious B.I.G and Sean P.Ditty Combs popularized the term “playa hater” As outdated and cliche as the phrase has become since, it was nothing short of brilliance to coin a phrase that so accurately describes an common behavior in men.

In Hip-Hop, an expression or act of hate often stems from jealousy or the insecurities of another man. But what makes one jealous or resentful by another man’s success or good fortune? On the surface, it seems irrational for a man to have any concerns about another man’s life and what’s he’s achieved. Like jay-Z says, “what you eat, don’t make me shit.” Another man’s life should never have any bearing on your own.

What is it that turns men into haters? I truly believe it’s not what seems obvious on the surface. It’s really not about the weath, talent, fame, women and success but what it symbolizes to the man who is lacking any one of these things. It’s a painful reminder of his inadequacies and what he hasn’t achieved. It’s a threat to his ego. Subconsciously he feels that somehow, someway he doesn’t quite measure up and that he must be a sucker. As a result, he begins to adopt sucker-like behavior. If he allows himself to indulge in such unappealing behavior, sooner or later, he will eventually get played like a sucker.

There are an infinite amount of examples of how and why people hate. Back in the early 80’s in New York City, there was a talentless graffiti writer named Cap MPC. Cap was the biggest hater in graffiti ever. He was jealous of all the hot burners and whole cars that guys like Kel 1st, Seen Tc5, Min-One, Skeme and Dez usedto produced. Secretly I suspect he wanted to burn, but it wasn’t happening for him. So instead he went over the burners with ugly ass throw-ups and destroyed countless whole cars in order to get fame.  He weakly justified his actions by sayingthat he was a “bomber.” Haters tend to make excuses and justifications for their actions. It comes with their weak character.

Hecklers heckle comdedians at their shows because they’re sore that the spotlight isn’t on them. So they attempt to steal some of the comdeian’s shine with whack ass jokes. A good comdedian will send the jerk home embarassed and his girlfriend or wife annoyed with him.

Some hate is more subtle like when a friend always feel the need to one-up you. It seems like that no matter where you been, done or been through, so have they, just a little bit better than you.

Another form of hate is when you present an idea to a friend or business assoicate and they manage to find everycon that is wrong with it before you even finish the sentence, instantly killing your newborn dream.

Other kinds of hate are more subliminal like when a friend or co-worker fails to give you props for something you deserve. Yes, refusing to recognize is a form of hate on the low.

Then there are some hate that is just plain obnoxious and stupid. One time I arrived at a work related party stylishly dressed in a Brooks Borthers suit and Thomas Pink shirt. After some of my co-worker finished complimenting me on my look, one underdressed jerk sarcastically informed me that he liked my “outfit.” I am not a guy who wears outfits.

So you see, their are many different ways to hate. Some people cleverly try to diguise their hate and it isn’t always obvious, but you can always smell it when it’s directed at you. As you begin to grow more sophisicated with your eye for such behaviors, they become rather transparent. Pity the hater. They’re painfully weak, tortured souls you should do best to ignore when they try to throw hate on your game. Kill them with kindness and indifference.

One might try to argue that since I seem to know so much about haters that I must be a hater myself. To this I have to say, doctors know a awful lot about Cancer, but they don’t always have Cancer.

*This blog is not directed at any one individual in paerticular, so don’t make the mistake of assuming. That would be hating on the low. Peace!

Word up Psycho. There is an awful lot of haters out there. Always trying to knock your hustle or game. But i have a question, what if, one of your boys is a mega toy right, and he has bin writing for years, he has done perhaps more than you, but the kid has no style no soul in his art. Graffiti is just not for him and he ends up just fronting all the time. Would hating on the graff persona that he created is be out of jealousy? Or are you just hating cuz the guy is a front. Even tho your respect the guy as an individual. You just hating on his toy graff cuz you know that it is simply not him. at this point in my life i am the farthest thing from a hater. but i see alot of that shit go on around me.  i find it comical but sometimes i think it could be necessary in order to put some one who is out of line back in to place. i would like to know you view on that. Once again, id like to thank you for education the youth with real talk about certain aspect in the community that are misrepresented. Much respect.

If your boy lacks style but continues to do his thing and is persistent and refuses to stop piecing, then you don’t really have a right to hate.  You should actually admire his diligence and question your lack of commitment.

i guess people hate because they lack the commitment to make something happen for themselves and the confidence to go forward to make whatever it is happen.  good words.

Psycho, I agree with you to an extent, but on that same note, I belive that cats are too quick to throw out the “hater” label when they are in a state of denial and dont want to face the truth. For example, If an aspiring writer (toy) is wack, and has a wack style, they dont want to accept it these days, and rather than pay their dues and take their lumps like a man, and come up correctly, they simply cop out and say, “they just hatin on me.” I believe this is why we have 30 year old toys these days with no progression.  There is a difference berween “regulating” and “hating”. In my opinion there should be a lot more regulating going on.  Survival of the fittest has become a thing of the past in the graff world.

“If I dont like it, I dont like it, it dont mean that I’m Hatin”

PS Outstanding blogs by the way, keep em comming

yo its refreshing to hear a different point of view about certain things. I might be wrong but i feel like alot of older guys are very silent about the cap topic and wont tell kids that what Cap was doing was lame then and its still a lame move on 2007.

Posted by  on October 31, 2007 at 08:51 PM

I like Cap!!!!! I think he made them cats go bigger, bolder, and nicer!!!! Cap fuck em’ up. All they could do was go out and burn subway cars even harder!!! I mean what he did was wack, but If it wasn’t for him you never know, you kinda gotta give him respect too!!!!!

"I like Cap!!!!! I think he made them cats go bigger, bolder, and nicer!!!! Cap fuck em’ up. All they could do was go out and burn subway cars even harder!!!”

I have never met or heard any MTA train era writer that was influenced to do dope styles or bigger fresher cars because of Cap MPC. I think that the writers cap went over were inspired by other Style Writers not some jerk off that wanted to go over them. but i could be wrong maybe the guys who was there can shed more light.

Im not Hateing , im Saying......

Posted by  on October 31, 2007 at 10:27 PM

I agree with Dash. Niggas are fast to always claim that they’re being hated on. It’s not always the hate I’m taking about that stems out of jealousy.

I don’t agree with IrizzakShitzzz when it comes to writers going bigger and bolder because of Cap. I don’t know where he got that info from, but he needs to recheck his sources. Word!

Posted by  on October 31, 2007 at 11:11 PM

Ahh, It not sources Pshyco, Just a thought.... I never said the writers were influenced by him...... I mean, Im not from a city like NYC. But we get up here too, and Ive been gone over. Im not claiming to be Style Master General Dondi (RIP) here!!!! Im just saying, It makes me want to go harded, it’s fuel to the fire.... If I paint a tight ass piece, and some dope comes and burns it with wack throw ups. Well, My next shit. Has to be even better. Getting crossed out is part of the game, It’s about the “FAME”. Maybe I stated myself wrong. I think CAP MPC, added fuel to the graffiti fire that was burning in NYC in the “Subway Era” of graffiti.

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 12:03 AM

didnt cap become can2 though and eventually learn to do some sick ass burners?

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 01:48 AM

I don’t think Cap is Can2..... I could be wrong.

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 08:26 AM

im only asking to see if its true got that info from a late 70’s early 80’s writer goes by reveal or devine(again bad spelling)

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 08:34 AM

Cap is not Can 2 and Cap never had a burner in his life, unless Seen U.A. did it for him.

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 09:28 AM

I do have one question Psycho, In style wars what was cap talking about seeing Seen and Duster and bam bam bam no matter if the camera crew was there or not.... He beefed and then got down with Seen or what????

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 08:37 PM

I don’t know the story. I just know they had beef and then they didn’t. I’ve personally seen Seen and Caps throw-ups together. I have a feeling that Seen is probably a very smart man and went bombing with the sucker a couple of times to make him feel loved, so he would diss his shit amy more. I can’t be mad at that.

Posted by  on November 01, 2007 at 10:53 PM

I see!!!!!!

Posted by  on November 02, 2007 at 08:34 AM

notice hhow you see alot of can2 and seen shit? weird isnt it?
but cap was just talkin about duster how he would fought him at the wall cause duster went over on of caps toy throwies
