Bushwick, New York

This is some contemporary NYC history.  In recent years the Bloods gang spread like wild fire in the NYC hoods.  These following videos explain this NYC gang phenomenon.  When I was doing time as an adolescent on Rikers Island, during the mid to early 90s I was able to see the birth of the UBN first hand.  I would have never figured out it would leak out into the streets and get out of control the way it did.

This is an interesting Gangland episode…

Really insightful and powerful, somewhat reminiscent of OG Gangs in NYC through the 70s. I remember the jump ins back then and the initiations that where similar. Funny how the more cultures change the more they stay the same. The problem is that the issues plaguing the inner city fuel this tribalism and posturing. One big difference in my generation was that the gangs evolved into community activists and did social outreach, the hypocrisy was that they also kept putting in work on the side. They too perished into history and what unfolded was this loose affiliation that no longer held local interest but national reach, this will likely continue multiply as resources become more spare.  Did you notice that even the Boys and Girls Club was empty, kids today are stimulated by so much other shit that is hard to keep them interested in your typical rec room activities.

I see kids from all kinds of sets and crews I know nothing of and I wonder in my head about them all well knowing that I too had to walk that path as a kid, the difference for me was my social environment in the 70s was far more unforgiving, society really kicked us to the curb and burnt out our homes to boot.  Thank God for Graffiti it saved my life, sort of.
