I Thought It Was You. (It was just your vocoder.)
Speaking of vocoders, Herbie Hancock uses one extensively on Sunlight (1978). Its probably right before Herbie really started to piss off jazz purists and went more and more mainstream with his sound. The first song ”I Thought It Was You”, Herbie uses a vocoder for the length of the song. Its ridiculous, borderline comical but definitely interesting. “Come Running To Me” gets the vocoder again. Basically any song that was not an instrumental (there are a couple) got the vocoder treatment. I guess Herbie was into the vocoder. And apparently, a shit-load of keyboards and synthesizers. The album was not well received by most people from what I’ve read, “For much of the album, he seems most interested in establishing a new career as an electronic vocalist”. And commenting on his insane keyboard set-up, “Stevie Wonder, he’s not.” Ouch. But he is Herbie Hancock, same guy that Miles Davis wanted in his line-up in 1963. He’s had a crazy run of so many musical styles. If you find it cheap, its worth picking up.
