OBEY on Houston Street

By - Sunday, April 25th, 2010

OBEY is in town. In preparation for Shepard Fairey’s big upcoming show at Deitch, they are putting up work around the city. Last week they wheat pasted the wall on Houston Street painted by Keith Haring in 1982 and by Os Gemeos last year. Tony Goldman, the owner of the freestanding wall, wisely decided to preserve the Os Gemeos piece by encasing it in a new, even bigger wall, and that’s what OBEY has been pasting on. A steady stream of legendary artists and entertainers including Blade, Charlie Ahearn and Dustin Hoffman dropped by each day to say hi and watch the action. On Thursday while waiting for Obama’s motorcade to pass by, I spotted the strange sight of a police truck piled with a tangled mess of hundreds of bicycles. Apparently someone worried about pipe bombs had ordered the sidewalks cleared. That meant clipping expensive locks and confiscating bikes without prior notification. Is that even legal?? If there was any danger of a bomb in a bike, shouldn’t the bomb squad have been called? Shame on the NYPD!
