12oz Twelve Book Edition: 12 Graffiti Books You Should Own

By - Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

While 12ozProphet is typically known for our commitment to showcasing graffiti, we’ve recently broadened the spectrum to art, music, style and general culture news. There is more to 12oz than meets the eye. This is evident when perusing the forums. A good example of this behind-the-scenes treasure trove is the  –Graffiti Books- thread, located in the Third Rail forum. This thread was started with the intent to share graffiti books that the forum members owned or liked. What makes threads like this even more impressive is the fact that they have been around for so long (almost ten years).

Apart from founding 12ozProphet, the online news platform and community, Allen Benedikt also published the printed version of 12ozProphet, the Also Known As book series, and Million Dollar Vandal, the story of Desa MTA. 12oz’ roots go back to print, so it’s only fitting that we pay homage to other graffiti-centered print publications, specifically books.

After doing extensive digging and research, this list of twelve graffiti books you should own. or at least check out, was compiled – courtesy of the forum members of 12ozProphet:

New York Graffiti: The Destiny Children by Destiny Children

Mascots & Mugs: The Characters and Cartoons of Subway Graffiti by Reas & Chino

Autograf: New York City’s Graffiti Writers by REVS

Also Known As by 12ozProphet

Sento:The Fantastic Partners by Alain Mariduena

The Faith of Graffiti by Norman Mailer

All City Writers: The Graffiti Diaspora by Andrea Caputo

By no means is this list comprehensive, nor is it long enough to include all of the incredible graffiti books out there. What books do you think belong on this list? If you could swap a book from this list, which would you drop? Sound off in the comments section below and be sure to check out the 12oz forums and go digging for knowledge.
