5Pointz Redevelopment Plans
5Pointz is an outdoor graffiti mecca in Long Island City, New York. The walls are completely covered in graffiti by artists from around the world who have painted at 5Pointz including Stay High 149, Tracy 168, Cope2, Part, and Tats Cru. 5Pointz is currently run by Jonathan Cohen aka “Meres One.” Cohen intended it to be an outdoor graffiti museum, however, he does not own the building. 5Pointz is owned by the Wolkoff family and they intend to redevelop the entire space. Just a few days ago plans for the redevelopment of 5Pointz were filed. The environmental assessment shows what the developers intend to do.
According to the proposal, the new building will have “two large apartment towers, one 47-stories high, the other 41 stories, containing about 1,000 market-rate apartment units. The base of the two buildings would be set aside for retail shops, artists’ galleries and a 250-car parking garage. There would also be a public park in the rear of the site.”
Thankfully there are plans for graffiti to be allowed on some of the walls at ground level. David Wolkoff plans to install “art walls” around the building and have them curated by Cohen. The plan details more about where the art will be located. “The proposed building would incorporate artistic elements such as an art wall within the publicly accessible open space at the rear of the building (the South Public Open Area) as well as within the interior courtyard. The building would also feature art windows along Davis Street as well as sculptures within the recreational and open spaces.”
It will be interesting to see how the development goes and how much public art will be allowed.
