ABMB: On the Road with Worlds Collide
Presented by Boost Mobile
12ozProphet’s Dirty Dozen Crew hit the road in a 16 passenger van to escape the miserable New York City weather in exchange for Miami heat and mayhem at the 2013 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. Side trips included a detour in Virginia, finding the largest selection of fried pork rinds and energy drinks East of the Mississippi, a stint South of the Border (a ritual when crossing North Carolina into its southern counterpart, breaking for air hockey and catching tags in their bathrooms), as well as a stop in some dirt water town along the way to stock pile enough fireworks to do 4th of July on the Hudson River justice. All the while, putting up stickers from our recently acquired batch and soaking in the great American countryside via Interstate 95.
An annual draw for artists, Art Basel fuses art, music and design amid warm skies and palm trees. Unifying locals with international, the high profile, taste-makers and styled, Miami provides a canvas amidst friends. Wynwood distracts with countless murals, graffiti, curiosity of those responsible and the legitimate brews of Panther Coffee. From street to gallery, the convention center and sister art fairs such as Scope, Context and Pulse made works from international gallery spaces accessible.
This year, Wynwood’s Gallery dedicated its Women on the Walls show to the late Tony Goldman, a show boasting contributions from global female talents such as Swoon, Miss Van, Fafi, Kashink, Sheryo and more, co curated by Jeffrey Deitch. Outdoor pool fun was provided by Friends With You, in addition to a garden oasis with love from Kenny Scharf. Deluxx Fluxx, a hyper arcade by New York artists, Faile and Bast created an audio, visual, sensory experience we got lost in. Other highlights at the top of our list included the reappearance of famed NYC spot, Max Fish courtesy of Klughaus gallery, an extension of The Newsstand at the Standard Hotel and the Colette Drive-thru.
We ended our week with parties, both Basel Castle and Boost’s sponsored event, Worlds Collide featuring works by street artist, Apex and muscial performances by DJ Green Lantern and Heroes x Villains.
See you next year Miami!
