ABMB: Recap – Art Basel – Miami Beach 2013
Art Basel – Miami Beach is the main event of a gallery packed line-up which gives the annual weekend its name. Art Basel started in Basel, Switzerland over 40 years ago when three local gallerists decided to put together an art show. The Miami Beach location was added to the circuit back in 2002 and has been responsible for the resurgence of art in and around Miami, including the Wynwood area. The event is held in the Miami Beach Convention Center and the space is broken up into display areas for 250 galleries from around the world. This years event drew over 75,000 people over four days. The floor is divided up into Zones A through D and it’s highly recommended to take advantage of the free map that they hand out when you enter. While the bag check and maps are provided at no cost, it’s hard to miss the cart offering champagne to the guests at a reasonable cost of $20 per glass. This event caters to the wealthy and this becomes even more apparent upon entering the VIP lounge where booths are set up by real estate company Douglas Elliman and private jet purveyor NetJets. Regardless of the price tags associated with the art at this event there were paintings, sculptures and installations worth checking out.
