SMoA Presents 'Dans la Rue' in Montreal
The Street Museum of Art (SMoA) has teamed up with Station16 for the launch of Dans la Rue, a public exhibition of the illegal art found around Montréal’s Plateau. Mapped out by the placement of SMoA’s museum, Dans le Rue guides visitors around the back alleys and side streets of Montréal to highlight the work of 13 local artists — Bfour, Gawd, Labrona, Listen Bird, Omen, Produkt, Rage5, Sake, Scaner, Stikki Peaches, Waxhead, WIA (aka whatisadam) and Wzrds Gang..
After MURAL Festival transformed Saint-Laurent Boulevard this summer with a series of commissioned murals, Dans la Rue: Montréal takes visitors through the neighborhood once again to rediscover what was already there. Including only the work of local artists — this exhibition celebrates the fleeting, subversive and DIY nature of the street art and graffiti movements. While the work may vary in medium — from spray paint and wheat pastes to installations and even wax drawings — the execution is the same. Each piece was placed on the street, for the public, without permission, transforming the neighborhood into the artists’ very own outdoor gallery.
Dans la Rue marks the first of SMoA’s international exhibitions to focus on the local artists working in a selection of cities worldwide. The Street Museum of Art is hitting the road and partnering with guest curators in each location to (underline) the unique talent, styles and techniques associated with their local street art scenes. Traditional museums organize major blockbuster exhibitions to travel the work of international artists; the Street Museum of Art is taking the concept of the museum directly to the cities these artists call home.
