Basquiat Exhibit To Open In Harlem

By - Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

{image-1} In a time before Banksy pieces were being sold at auction houses for thousands of dollars, Jean Michael Basquiat was a legend in the downtown New York art scene. Although the journey from vandal to high-profile art celebrity has played out a few times in recent history, Basquiat was among the first and, arguably, the most influential. Opening August 13th, a new exhibit at the Museum of African American Cinema is showing off some of his work and the works by 35 other artists that help to demonstrate Basquiat’s pervasive influence in the art world.
