Berlin's Graffiti History and Current Position

By - Thursday, July 14th, 2011

{image-1} Came across this article from Smashing Magazine about Berlin’s graffiti/ street art scene and history. What caught our eye is the fact that Berlin is being called (and has been for some time) “the most bombed city in Europe.” The article continues to say that the authorities are in a position where leaving the graffiti helps to increase tourism based on well known pieces and there by hacking away at their debt. Not bad. But the graffiti task unit still views graffiti as a crime though their goal is to “catch the tagging crews whose work has its roots not in art, but in gang culture. In a video from 2008 we found from the NY Times, one of the writers featured says that the punishment for being caught writing isn’t so severe. Check out the whole story and history of Berlin’s graffiti here.
