Charlie DOVES “Love and War” Solo Exhibition Opens Today
NYC and TC5’s own Charlie Doves is famed for illustrating different urban styles. His work is characterized by various aspects of 80’s & 90’s pop culture such as cinema, poster and cover art, creatures, cartoons, blended with his own perspective and signature style.
Growing up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Charlie had a great amount of eclectic artistry around him, from the early street artists to the grimy graffiti. Charlie began his love for art through drawing cartoon characters such as The Ghostbusters, which has remained his inspiration throughout the years. This young artist’s future began to take shape when the esteemed Dontay TC5, a pioneer in graffiti art, took notice and threw him under his wing for a short time and taught him the fundamentals of classic NYC graffiti. Since then, Charlie Doves has nurtured his artistry by exploring the use of mixed media, prompting his debut in the gallery scene which has been his main objective for the last few years.
His commercial work includes illustrations, airbrush and aerosol pieces commissioned by clients such as PEPSI Cola, Def Jam Records, Supreme (Skating Brand), MTV Studios, Converse, Mass Appeal, RedBull, the Xmental Kids Program, and the Estria Graffiti Battles.
Charlie Doves, solo exhibition Love and War at Bishop on Bedford Gallery is a culmination of the proverbial blood, sweat and tears splashed, defined and blended on canvas over the span of 2 years. With cues from ancient Japanese woodblocks and manuscripts along with pop culture hits and modern sensibilities, Doves is able to present a cohesive fusion of techniques, styles and grace that result in a timeless body of work.
