Closing Night: Patrick Martinez "Lovely Day" at Known Gallery

By - Monday, July 16th, 2012

On June 30, Known Gallery wrapped up Lovely Day, a solo show by contemporary artist Patrick Martinez. The exhibition displayed Martinez’s vibrant paintings and portraits set in the streets of LA, neon signs displaying hip-hop themes, sculptures and his limited-edition objects. Martinez’s inspiration derives from the city, “it’s crazy to me that I wake up to beautiful days here in LA, but they are juxtaposed with the ‘evil’ things that happen in this sublime city,” he explained. What makes Patrick’s work stand out is his use of his tongue in cheek humor to convey his message. In “Culture of Honor” he depicts a thuggish man equipped with a children’s floatie. His attitude may be hard and tough but ultimately the childish device overrides any street cred. Lovely Day was a truly unique show and proved why Martinez is one of the most intriguing young artists in Los Angeles at the moment. Text: Keisha Raines Photo: Birdman
