{image-1} Co-founder and co-creator of Vans canvas deck shoes James Van Doren, passed away Oct 12th after a tough battle with cancer. Opened in 1966, Vans shoes were designed with a special sole of volocanized rubber and characteristic waffle pattern. This special grip made them particularly popular in the early Southern California skateboard scene, and have since been dubbed the first “skateboard shoe”. After being immortalized as Jeff Spicoli’s favorite shoe in the 1982 classic “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, Vans have spread to almost every corner of the Earth. Despite manufacturing being outsourced to China, Vans still remain a symbol of youth and an icon of timeless design. {image-2} Source: Gawker Images: The Shoe Game
