Britain’s own rockstar artist Damien Hirst has lent a painting to the Leicester Square London Burger King for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The painting titled, ‘Beautiful Psychedelic Gherkin Exploding Tomato Sauce All Over Your Face, Flame Grilled Painting 2003,’ will be displayed in the 200 seat upstairs dining area. Burger King UK Ltd Marketing Director for the UK and Ireland, Jo Blundell said the piece is a move towards adding a modern touch to their stores.
Not solely a publicity stunt to gain an edge on Olympic sponsor McDonald’s, it is truly the perfect piece of flair for the store as its title references the juicy flame grilled technique Burger King advertises. The two meter spin painting is housed behind reinforced glass to ensure enraged sport fans or art appreciators will not add their own exploding tomato sauce to the work.
