Preview: Dee and Ricky "Heart Breakers" at Rox Gallery
Design duo Dee and Ricky are opening their debut art exhibition, “Heart Breakers,” the inaugural show at Rox Gallery in the Lower East Side curated by Miz Metro. Dee and Ricky are best known for their fashion accessories made out of legos which lead to a collaboration with Marc Jacobs and a celebrity following, with their pins frequently spotted on the likes of Kanye West. These two recently opened a restaurant in Brooklyn, Dee and Ricky’s Home Cooking, and this evening have their first foray into the art world.
Opening on Valentine’s Day, their body of work includes deconstructed lego hearts, bulletproof teddy bears made out of Kevlar and canvas, and skateboard decks painted to look like they were produced by Christian Louboutin. Playing to their strength, a special lego heart pin made specially for the “Heart Breakers” opening is being sold for $25 at the door for entry to the event.
For the opening night event, the lower level of the gallery will be filled with visual projections from another artistic duo, Mr. GIF, whose work is based on the trend of animated GIFs on the internet. And for those whose Valentine’s Days don’t go so well, throughout the run of the show, visitors will be able to make an appointment with artist Ahmet Civelek for a “Destruction Session.” Sometimes nothing feels better than taking a sledgehammer to something fragile. Check out the video posted below of one participant smashing a microwave. Looks like fun.
Dee and Ricky’s “Heart Breakers” opens February 14th from 8pm-Midnight at Rox Gallery located at 86 Delancey Street in the Lower East Side and will be on display through March 1st.
