By - Friday, April 10th, 2015

Musical biopics and documentaries seem to be the latest trend and on May 7, the beloved and deceased songwriter Elliott Smith will have his story conveyed on the big screen.

The film Heaven Adores You, was originally Kickstarted in 2011 where it saw massive success, allowing it to be shown at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival. Directed by Nickolas Rossi, this is the first project related to Elliott Smith that has been allowed rights to his music. Close friends, bandmates and family members such as Smith’s sister, Ashley, all had a considerable part in helping the film come together. All parties came together to add their own stories, photos, interviews and previously unseen footage and songs, making this project exceptionally personal.

The whispery and morose musician saw his last day on Oct. 21, 2003, leaving behind an eminent discography and much more. The documentary plans to highlight Smith’s entire life, not only his sufferings and battles with depression, but his endless talent and the positivity in his life.

Eagle Rock Entertainment and SpectiCast made it feasible for Heaven Adores You to play in theaters—check out the trailer and list of screenings and release dates here.
