Funk, Swing and Style – An Interview With SKORE 79.
Letters are weapons, a obsession designed to release an opinion – an inner anger or movement that is honed over years of practice so the barrier between the self and art form is steadily erased. Skores style isn’t for the faint hearted, its angular, technical and downright wild.
“I got started writing graffiti in the early 90s in a small town at the northwestcoast from Germany. Inspired by the movies Beatstreet and Wildstyle, I was trying to do the same. Breakdancing and writing Graffiti. My first Name was ROM, then ROB. Quite simple letters with a little Bubbletouch…
..95-96 I started to write Skor, then Skore. I liked the letter “S” on the beginning of the word because it is wild in nature and you can combine a lot of other letters to it.”
Did you ever have much luck with breakdancing haha?
No, I was quite funky at the up rock thing and my sixstep was ok, but my powermoves were wack as hell. But I had a fresh Adidas trainer back in da days, haha!
In several recent interviews, i’ve spoken to a lot of artists who occupy the other side of graffiti – the so called ‘anti-style’ producers whose main focus can be generally considered as focusing on the pure freedom of expression that graffiti brings with it. This is a movement that divides the culture though, with some – and certainly Skore himself – not being fan of the looseness of the style of crews like PAL / Germes Gang…
Never heard of them, you mean these ‘Blade’ copies? Dont know what to say about that. I mean you have such great tools today like different spray can companies, different caps, cheep groundcolours etc and all that they produce is this whack letter-structure. Not worth a look in my opinion. But live and let live, I say.
This feeds back into how Skore describes his own work as focusing more on style rather than the technique, which could be said to be somewhat antithetical to the aforementioned ‘anti-style’ purveyors. Skores pieces are “classic wild style – with some new aspects”, it’s therefore no surprise then that his 3 words to describe graffiti are Funk, Swing and Style.
For me its more important to have a good swing in the letters, as to have very sharp and cutted outlines. Another important thing is to have good and fresh combination in between the letter structure. Trying to stay fresh and original is my motto. The science of letters. It has no borders. You can add anything you want to it, to bring your letters to life, graffiti helped me find some very good friends and crew-members over the years.
Why does such technical wild style appeal to you over simpler designs?
I Dont know exactly. Maybe I´m feelin it more. Maybe to hide my blurry lines, haha. I´m more the aggressive one and I think with Wildstyle you can get your letters a bad look. I can say my current influences are coming from my both crews SBB&ABS. There are People like Phet, Dejoe, Sbeck, Pork. Which are in my eyes stylemasters in many levels.
Skores list goes on and on with KidKaro(Spade) TPM and SureTPM being mentioned along with Ores from Italy and Keep6 from Canada but the original New York and 80’s Berlin writers still maintain strong influence.
Everyone is said to have their own arrow and connections, what do you think yours give to your graffiti? as in, how do you use yours?
There are some limitations, you cannot have your own arrows I think. Everything is already painted but what you can do is to have a different kind of combination of the letters and elements. You can have a different (or your own) connection inbetween the letters which is really important to me.
The connections need to have sense, without damaging the single letter….What you can also do is to have your own swing or movement in your letters.
I would compare my style with old Kungfu movies, not that jet li shit…in a mix with looney toons, haha. Films like 36th Chambers Of Shaolin and Drunken Masters.
Ritual can be a big thing among writers, with the preparation that goes into producing something becoming habit over a set period of years, whether that be listening to music, drinking beer or smoking…
Yes all of that, lmao! It depends. But mostly while I´m doing a piece the wall or on the paper I´m trying to stay clear in the head and only listen to music.
Any music in particular you listen to when you’re painting?
I like Jedi Mind Tricks, Vinnie Paz, Ill Bill, Prodigy. My favorite tune is still Alchemist ft Prodigy: Albert Einstein and Mobb Deep’s Hell on Earth. I Listen to some german MCs as well, but they’re rare.
Its enough to handle this kind of lifestyle on top of a standard job, but i’ve always found it intriguing how writers are able to match a illegal subculture against the constraints of family life. But Skore seems to find a good balance, maintaining both a healthy relationship with graffiti and his daughters..
Im not that every-day-painter. It is enough for me to have 12-15 pieces a year, which leaves a lot time for my girls. When I have to decide to paint a wall or my girls I choose my girls. Generally I´m doing my sketches all at night, while my kids are sleeping.
Whilst Skore 79 isn’t the kind of writer you’d find bombing trains these days, his dedication to the perfection of such a complex style demands respect. If there were ever a writer to look to the define what ‘Letter Science’ would be..it’s him.
