Gilf – Check Your Selfie

By - Monday, January 27th, 2014

Social media has given the world instantaneous access to our daily lives. The selfie, a modern day digital self portrait, dominates our feeds and has changed our dialogs. Instead of discussing ideas and telling stories, we’re discussing beauty, status, and self importance. We overlook a world of substance when we create micro-celebrities who tilt our culture towards myopic individualism. #checkyourselfie will examine vanity, our disconnection with reality & body image, and address the selfie’s isolating effects on society through classic and contemporary versions of the self portrait – GILF
GILFis starting out the new year with her #checkyourselfie campaign, exploring social media today and the selfie contagion. The artist is releasing one image per day for five days with an accompanying statement to initiate a dialogue via social media, leading up to her show at AHA Fine Art on Thursday Feb 6. A percentage from all sold work will go to the causes associated with each image. She is also offering the opportunity to win a signed print through participating in the campaign. To win, create your own extreme selfie that engages the community or poses a question. She will review the images based on it’s composition, creativity and context. Hashtag your submissions with #checkyourselfie More GILF here
