Grrlz Gettin Ova: Girls On Top (GOT) Crew
In May 2013, New York was hit by some of the illest female writers the UK has to offer. Chock and Pixie of the Girls On Top came over to the States for the crew’s group exhibition at the bOb Gallery, and naturally they hit up a few spots around the city to leave their mark. They also took a little bit of New York back with them, loading up their blackbooks and MTA maps with tags by writers from around the city.
Chock is one of the two founding members of GOT, which she formed in 2000 in Manchester, UK with fellow writer Ned. The crew was formed as a way to get more girls active in the graffiti scene in Manchester, where there were very few female writers at the time. The girls have said on their website that they wanted to “encourage other girls to paint as well as have so much fun doing it.” Now, thirteen years later, GOT truly has climbed to the top, hosting all-girl graffiti jams on the regular, holding an exhibition in LES, and hitting some of the hottest spots NYC has to offer.
Of course, one of Chock and Pixie’s first stops when they came to New York was 5 Pointz Aerosol Art Center.
The girls also hit up Hunts Point, collaborating with some of NYC’s finest female writers at an All-Grrl jam on Boone Avenue. Accompanying the GOT girls’ work were pieces by MS163, Abby, Queen Andrea, Erotica 67, and Neks.
