To celebrate the release of his Big Subway Archive, legendary graffiti photographer Henry Chalfant recently gave a rare interview, in conversation with Bill Adler at the Apple Store in SoHo. Chlafant discussed his upbringing and life before graffiti, as well as his first exposure to graffiti on the New York subways in 71-72. However, you might want to jump to about 10-minutes into the 36-minute video to fast forward to the days of Subway Art, Style Wars, and all that followed. Sharing stories that may not be common knowledge, he talks about how his SoHo studio became a veritable salon for writers at the time and why he started taking karate at 45 (ultimately earning a black belt!)
Henry Chalfant’s Big Subway Archive is available for purchase now on the Apple iTunes store.
