Historic Mars Bar Set to House TD Bank

The newly-built space on the corner of East First Street and Second Ave, which is remembered by locals as Mars Bar, is set to house a 4,300 square-foot branch of TD Bank on the ground floor commercial space. The NY Post reported that TD Bank has signed a 20 year long lease to occupy the commercial space.

The corner space home to Mars bar since 1984 was removed two years ago to make room for a 12-story apartment tower, Jupiter 21. The building is composed of a mix of condo and rental units, with 13 units reserved for affordable housing. Nine of the 13 will be for original owners, who were asked to leave when construction began. As promised, 4 of the remaining units will be sold through “lottery” for around $150K, only to those who earn less than $64K.

Billy Gray of the Commercial Observer reports that the lease includes a second retail space which could assume the trade name and liquor license of Mars Bar. The owner, Hank Penza, had been looking for a new space with plans to reopen back when they closed, but nothing has come of that. Hopefully, he was just holding out until he got his original space back, complete with a bank and swanky apartments.
