Inside the Human Beatbox – A peek at the inner realms of a Vocal Percussionist

By - Friday, March 22nd, 2013

The intricacies of the human body are always fascinating, one of the most incredible forms of human evolution was the ability to produce and shape sound. This led to modern language and communication, spring boarding the human species into a high speed incline of evolution. We thank such intricate organs of the body as our lungs, vocal chords, tongue, and lips. In the late 70’s and early 80’s an explosion of vocal talent came to light through the Hip-Hop culture as the Human Beatbox. Using the same and new principles of speach, individuals created and mimicked drum beats and sound effects, laying way to the incredible world of vocal percussion as we see it today. Cycles of breath, pulses of air being controlled via diaphragm, lips and tongue manipulating and shaping these exchanges of air and body, all in unison to create music and rhythm! Take a peek through Chicago based vocal percussionist Jam One, a glimpse inside the inner workings of the human beatbox. A small camera was inserted and fed through his nasal cavity, and down into his throat to get a peek at the vocal chords, just beyond the back of the tongue. See the insanity as they do their intricate dance of vibration and contraction to help shape and mold the Kicks, Hihats, Snares, and rhythms as he kicks his beats! Text and Video: Jam One
