Instagram Roundup: Stella Blu @bystellablu
From having her artwork featured on a segment of Jimmy Fallon, to having it worn on shirts by members of Prince’s backing band 3rdeyegirl, Sri Lankan artist Stella Blu has accomplished a lot in just 24 years.
After moving to the US from the UK (and around several states in the US), she currently resides in Los Angeles, California. She cites biculturalism and her strong upbringing with her Sri Lankan heritage as major influences in who she is today and how she approaches creating her artwork.
When scrolling through her Instagram feed, the words breathtaking and colorful come to mind. She is also majorly influenced by the large amount of traveling she has done over the span of her life, and occasionally allows her followers glimpses of the places she has traveled to. She shows her artistic prowess in a wide array of mediums: colored pencil, watercolor paints, black ink pens, oil paints, etc. Her artwork tends to revolve mostly around feminine subjects and the women in her work tend to have the most strikingly real eyes.
“I love being a woman and I love learning about other women. We all have amazing stories to share and tell: that’s what I love. I love creating pieces with women who have a story to tell just in their eyes or face alone.”
At the moment she runs her own online shop, where she sells pieces of her art along with taking commissions for her work. Her artwork has also been featured in an episode of Fox’s New Girl in an episode featuring Prince. With the attention she has attracted from her unique perspective on her art, it’s safe to say that we can expect even more greatness from her in the future.
