JC Rivera and Joseph “Sentrock” Perez: The Construction and Deconstruction of a Mural

By - Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

With a famous street art / graffiti building in their hands, JC Rivera and Joseph “Sentrock” Perez teamed up again after their mural collaboration at Art Basel in Miami. On the corner of Milwaukee and Grand Avenues, close to the West loop neighborhood. With plans in hand to destroy this building, these two amazingly talented street artists have created a mural, “rise above the ashes,” as their statement before the destruction of this iconic tagged spot.

Both artists are known for a bear character and here they have put them together to create a powerful artistic statement. Once again, the Bear Champ from JC has his gloves on ready to fight and Sentrock’s bear is in full effect, mouth open and ready to bite!

Knowing that the building was going to be destroyed in a couple of weeks, it was a surprise that it was destroyed only two days after the mural was finished. Paint on Saturday, destroyed on Monday. Unfortunate and upsetting, but understood.

I was lucky enough to photograph both the construction and deconstruction of this new mural. Now the building is a pile of bricks on the ground.
