MONSTER SOUNDS: Blacklisted – Deeper Kind.

By - Monday, December 22nd, 2014

It’s been a fair while since Blacklisted last graced the Hardcore scene, with 2009’s ‘No-one Deserves To Be Here More Than Me’ proving their last major offering. That release split the community firmly down the middle, with its grunge infused, trumpet laden, eclectic material marking a distinctly different direction than their previous balls to wall ‘Peace On Earth, War On Stage’ releases. This prior mix of ferocious rhythm, with George Hirsch’s open and introspective lyricism, established them over a number of years as a band loved for, and defined by a raw, unapologetic sound. But that record showed how honesty encased in anger, however sunken in, can over the years subside into just honesty. It could well be seen as a creative experiment with closure.

After a few years hiatus they’re back, with ‘Deeper Kind‘ being the first single from their upcoming Deathwish Inc. release ‘As People Grow, People Go’. Recorded by Will Yip at Studio 4, Deathwish Inc. calls it “an eleven song amalgamation of Blacklisted’s brave experimental leanings and their unquestionable hardcore heart”, and if ‘Deeper Kind‘ is anything to go by then I’m inclined to agree. The song has the pace and ferocity crafted over the earlier releases, but features a breakaway chorus riff that screams influence from the later ‘So, You Are A Magician’ EP. The lyrical content echoes this maturity, with George proclaiming numerous times over the course of the song that “this is a deeper kind of love”.

With ‘Deeper Kind‘ Blacklisted cements another new era of their ever-expanding sound, the single a perfect representation of a band who have purposefully grown, adapted and innovated with every release – but still retain an intrinsic passion for their music.

‘As People Grow, People Go’ will be released via Deathwish Inc. on February 10th, 2015.
