Music Video: Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) “Niggas in Poorest”

The latest video by Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, presents a remix of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s of hit record “Niggas in Paris,” renamed “Niggas in Poorest.” Officially the first bars he released since changing his alias from Mos Def, Bey’s response is highly political, offering his own critique of the showboating conspicuous consumption nature common in hip hop today.

Speaking from the perspective of the working class, or perhaps the unemployed even, Bey’s version gives a much realer, more hard hitting depiction of life today. “Doctors say I’m the illest, I ain’t got no insurance.” The lyrics on the bottom of the screen are intended to emphasize the meaning behind each line. The videos release today is intended to pay tribute to Malcolm X, who was assassination on the same date, February 21st 1965.
