News: Slut Walk NYC

By - Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Sluts paraded through Union Square Park on Saturday, but this wasn’t just any day in Union–these women (and a few men) dressed up as sluts to bring issues like rape, and domestic and sexual violence into discussion. The idea for Slut Walk stemmed out of the University of Toronto, when University personnel warned women students to not “dress like sluts” in order to avoid sexual assault. Slut Walk supporters and participants rallied for the right for women to dress how they want, say what they want, drink if they want, walk in whatever neighborhood they want, and no one should be able to touch them. There seems to be little disagreement on this idealistic goal, although it’s unclear whether they are rallying for or against women’s rights to exercise realistic common sense. Another aspect to the rally is intended to draw attention to incidences and court cases where police officers and others in law enforcement have placed the blame for the sexual assault on the victims, due to the victim’s apparent “slutiness.” Check out the drama about skirts happening in Park Slope right now. It was tastefully ironic that, as with any other protest, the NYPD was close at hand to keep the peace. Text: Caylee
