W Hotels of New York is pleased to present W Room and Boards, a unique skateboard guest experience in support of the Youth Foundation, Stoked.org. W Room and Boards is a charity project inspired by the culture of NYC. Curator Ray Mendez will be working with five designers to create skateboards that have been inspired by “New York’s endless energy,” as well as the designers’ own personal experiences. Yes, the event is curated by former Pro Action Sports Athlete, now filmmaker, Ray Mendez. It will launch on June 26th at W New York Union Square with board designs by Amar’e Stoudemire, Cara DeLevigne, Cope2, David LaChapelle, and Zana Bayne.
On creating the initiative, W Hotels of New York commented, “We enlisted established design and fashion Insiders alongside the up and coming Ninjasonik crew to help us create an alternative New York experience for our guests. Partnering with Stoked enables us to give back too”, says Simon Warrington – Marketing Director W Hotels of New York.
To support the Youth Foundation Stoked.org, W Hotels of New York will be offering packages that will include free skateboard rentals and an interactive custom board display from June through December. The skateboards will be available to purchase online as well. Original one-of-a-kind boards will start at $500, and limited edition graphic prints will start at $50. All proceeds will go to Stoked.org to promote youth’s personal development, healthy living, and academic achievement through sports culture.
Curator Ray Mendez also worked alongside his Parlour Productions team to film a series of vignette-style documentaries profiling the contributing artists. The team also produced a music video featuring Ninjasonik. The music video and promotional film focuses on Jah Jah Brown (of Ninjasonik) riding the skateboard designed by Cope2 around each of the W Hotels of New York’s properties, leading his crew on an all-night party at each location. The shorts can be viewed at whotelsnewyork.com/wboards in the “Watch Me” section.
The launch of the collection will take place June 26th with a surprise event.
