In celebration of Black History Month, Nike, Inc. has unveiled their new collection, Nike Black History Month (BHM), featuring three stellar athletes who they believe to be “fearless in action and fueled by a purpose.”
Soccer powerhouse Didier Drogba, tennis legend Serena Williams and basketball superstar Kevin Durant served as inspiration for the line, which features seven shoes, two t-shirts, a Destroyer jacket, Nike Elite socks, and a 5-panel hat. Each athlete has their own logo that is featured throughout the collection: Drogba’s, a lightbulb combined with a soccer ball (emblematic of his role in brining solar light bulbs to impoverished areas in Africa); Williams’, a tennis ball with protruding lightning bolts (symbolic of her efforts to empower young women via the secondary school she helped to build in Kenya); Durant’s, a basketball hoop combining with a cloud (representative of the “hopes and dreams of young athletes” and of the backing he has given to his hometown recreation center in Seat Pleasant, Maryland).
The three icons are patterned to create a unique Nike BHM print that is featured throughout the collection. The regimented color palette of black, grey, brown, copper and orange makes for a clean, cohesive and earthy aesthetic.
A fusion of both Nike Sportswear lifestyle product and Nike Basketball performance product, the BHM shoes include the Lunar Force 1, Air Force 1 Foamposite Hi, Dunk Sky Hi, Air Force 1 Downtown, KD V, LEBRON X, and KOBE 8 SYSTEM. The kicks will debut on the NBA court on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this upcoming Monday January 21st. The apparel will debut on January 26th.
The collection aims to highlight not only the athletic achievements of Drogba, Williams, and Durant, but also to bring attention to their commitment to social and civic stewardship. The Nike BHM mantra, “Be Bold, Be True” (see above) encapsulates these athletes’ outstanding achievements both on the court and off. In keeping with the theme of paying it forward and giving back, Nike will be making financial contributions to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America with some of the proceeds from the Nike BHM collection.
Be sure to check out the collection, which will be available in the upcoming weeks.
