Nike Joins Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” Active Schools Initiative

By - Thursday, February 28th, 2013

Nike is teaming up with First Lady Michelle Obama in an effort to help the kids of America get involved in physical activity once again at school. Mrs. Obama will get together with Nike CEO Mark Parker and superstar athletes including Serena Williams, Allyson Felix, Bo Jackson, Sarah Reinertsen, Colin Kaepernick, Ashton Eaton, Gabby Douglas, and Paul Rodriguez for a major announcement regarding the new Nike-backed initiative today at 12 noon EST out in Chicago. Studies show kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day to stay healthy, but they are spending an average of seven or more hours a day in front of a screen, and only 1 in 3 kids are active daily. In addition to the health benefits of an active lifestyle, research indicates that regular physical activity can improve test scores, classroom behavior and attendance. Yet, only 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle schools and 2% of high schools currently offer daily P.E. and only 9 states require recess in elementary schools. Check out the accompanying video above that introduces the Michelle Obama/Nike plan and watch for the big reveal to go down today. Visit their official website and support the cause here.
