Recap: Nike Sb X Mcrad Release Party

Roughly a week ago, the good fellas over at Kinetic Skateshop and Reign Skateboarding put on a party for Chuck Treece and Mcrad Philly style. The party was in celebration of Nike Sb’s newest release, which is a dunk high done up in Mcrad “Absence of sanity” colorblocking. For those unaware, Chuck Treece is an old head in the game and has earned his respect. He was the first black skateboarder to ever be featured on the cover of Thrasher, putting him up with the likes of athletes such as Jackie Robinson.  He’s also the lead in the popular 80’s skate punk group known as Mcrad.

At first when walking down Alter St. in Philadelphia one might think they took a wrong turn, after all who would expect a indoor skate complex to be situated in the gritty warehouse district of Philly. But upon approaching 1702 Alter St. the sounds of punk music and skateboards smacking the floor could be heard. 1702 Alter St. is an indoor skate complex owned by Thrasher and House of Vans. They only open to the public during certain special occasions such as this one. Inside, a local punk band warmed up the night with local Philadelphia skate talent shredding it up. Cold brews were all around and the smell of freshly burnt bud could be found in the air, with good vibes all around. The night finished out with the man himself and Mcrad showing up fashionably late, greeting new fans and old friends with open arms. While things closed out on Alter St. the party did not, and things picked back up later that night at the Philly bowl.

Mcrad hosted their own private show at the Philly bowl, playing almost all of the classics from their debut album Absence of Sanity. The private show was certainly the perfect way to finish off the night, and this event served as a reminder to us all that while love park may be long gone, the heart of Philadelphia skateboarding is still alive and kicking.
