Photo: Banksy- "Better Out Than In"“Manhattan”, Allen Street near Canal Street It’s been almost three years that NY has had any new Banksy art. But now, the infamous street artist is back in New York City with a new project! During the month of October, “Banksy will be attempting to host an entire show on the streets of New York”, according to his website. On Tuesday, October 1st, his first piece, as seen above, appeared at 18 Allen Street in Chinatown. Along with it was a toll-free line number, “1-800-656-4271 #1”. If you call you will hear a pretty amusing message describing the piece.
**To prove these are authentic Banksy pieces, he has posted photos of them on his website and on his Instagram. So be sure to check either one to verify.**
But with much of street art, Banksy’s piece was messed with. The sign, which read “GRAFFITI IS A CRIME” was stolen only hours after its location became public. Smart Crew proceeded to fill the empty space with a sign of their own, which read “STREET ART IS A CRIME”, with their logo on top. Unfortunately, Smart Crew’s sign was also stolen. After that, a few unknowns decided to go over the piece. By the next morning, the entire thing was buffed! There’s a tag that reads, “(c) PHATLIPP Sweaty palms made me lose the love of my life! 🙁“…okay?…
Anyway, I was so disappointed…take a look at what I saw. BUT WAIT! There are more! Yesterday, Wed. Oct. 2, the second piece, Westside, appeared in Chelsea, on 25th St. between 10th and 11th Ave. It makes sense that he would choose this neighborhood that’s full of art galleries and has a lot of traffic. It shows Banksy’s sense of humor by writing the first half in a NY style graffiti font and the other in his usual font. By the time I got to it, someone decided to go over this one as well.
C’MON PEOPLE! Let them breathe freely for at least 24 hours! “Westside” The most recent piece, which was also spotted yesterday, (Wed. Oct. 2) I found out about through Instagram. People were posting photos of a new Banksy piece on 24th St. between 6th and 5th. Since I was in the neighborhood I went to check it out and sure enough, there it was. AND NO ONE HAD GOTTEN TO IT YET! It had “1-800-656-4271 #2” on the sidewalk to its right. It was of a hydrant and its best friend, a dog. Today, Banksy posted a photo of this on his IG account and website, verifying this is the third installment. “Midtown” Three days into October and we already have three pieces! Will this be a daily thing? A two-a-day thing? Who knows? I would love to see him hit some neighborhoods uptown. How awesome would it be to see Banksy in Harlem, Washington Heights, or maybe even the Bronx? Let’s see if Banksy feels like leaving his comfort zone downtown and venture into new areas. I mean, he is unpredictable. I’m following this project all month so be sure to check back for updates! Photo Credits: Melibelle Lavandier
