Photo: Sever’s Cheeky Murals in Detroit Predict the Death of Street Art

With an All Star line-up of graffiti writers currently in Detroit for the Detroit Beautification Project, it appears as though Sever has taken a different approach than those rocking burners, chromes, and fills all over. In the comedic piece above Sever illustrates the death of Street Art with a casket being carried by Twist, Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Futura, and Kaws. And below is appears as though even Captain America has fallen victim to the epidemic of obesity in this country with 7-11 Big Gulp and corndog in hand.

As true as this is, is MSK equally responsible for selling out graffiti? T-shirts, bracelets, man purses? And a photographer and video guy on every tag or sticker put up? I think MSK, art in the streets and all the above mentioned in Sever’s piece are equally responsible for the demise of graffiti.
Super Big!
ps. sever forgot to add 12oz on the wall
The irony in the above pieces,
Let me call up Lush and Banksy and see what they think about there
styles being jacked by supposed graffiti purists. Graffiti gets worse every
year that goes bye.
I think the death of graffiti came when s.fairey was paying graffiti artists to put his stickers up. Remember Che from SF? Paying people to put you up on top of being in graffiti shows that have nothing to do with wheat pasting just pisses me off. If there’s a graffiti show about new york handstyles from the 70’s, that show should not include s.fairey, but he still seems to find his way in every show. I know everyone jocks him because he’s super rich and they want to be cool so he can pay for everything, but have a little dignity for gods sake. As soon as he came on the scene, the graffiti stock chart took a steep decline.
Frest Paint NYC, you’re a fucking moron. NYC has one of the weakest scenes right now. It used to have a reputation and now it’s totally played out. It’s been the new SF for awhile now with every moron who thinks they’re a writer going there to do his 2 months of damage, then returning home.
It’s fine to get paid to do graffiti, but don’t be like twist and complain of commercialism and then do hats that sell at RVCA and Urbanoutfitters. And anyone remember the old RIme interview where he talked shit about legal graffiti and now look at him. I just think it’s another whole situation to change your views to get paid, to me that’s selling out.
The graff scene is weak right now. Everyone is a writer and a street art expert. Bring the box cutters back and slash the out of towners.
this is fucking dope
