Call me a jaded New York City resident, but I was under the impression that when Giuliani did everything in his power to all but murder the drag queens, hip-hop and the prolific graffiti scene in New York, he subdued them overseas too. However, after traveling in Europe (and living in Madrid for the past few weeks), I stand corrected. Graffiti is alive and well, and is not met with the same amount of resistance overseas as it is now faced with in New York. It seems it just had to move out of Manhattan—the rent was getting ridiculous and the vandal squad was becoming more than a nuisance.
As I am new to Madrid, any tips on specific street artists or locations I should hunt out are more than welcome.
