News: Portland ME Attempts A Crackdown On Graffiti

By - Thursday, September 15th, 2011

{image-1} The city of Portland has announced an ordinance being passed that would incriminate people for “possession of graffiti instruments” such as paint markers. They are trying to curb the “threat of graffiti to the city” which they believe is detracting tourism and negatively affecting businesses. However, writers have stepped up and stated that this act is only symbolic and will either have no effect or only heighten the amount of visible graffiti in their city. One writer, who remained under the guise of N.D.B, stated “It’s a city. So graffiti is a natural occurrence in cities and urban areas. I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as they are making it out to be.” Also, Aubin Thomas, author of the blog “Freezetagging”, who is actually against graffiti stated “If it’s for the thrill of doing something illegal, then I have a feeling the ordinance may run into some major enforcement problems because it could add fuel to that fire.” Text: Wileyakin
