Preview: Art by Louie "KR.ONE" Gasparro at 5Pointz
Early this June, 5Pointz Gallery in Long Island City will be holding a one-day event featuring the art of Louie KR.ONE Gasparro, bringer of the Kolorstorm. Due to flooding in the gallery on the original date in mid-May, the show has been rescheduled for Sunday June 9th.
Queens native Louie KR.ONE Gasparro was one of 12 children born to a family of Italian immigrants, and has been an active member of New York graffiti culture since the late seventies. Gasparro was involved in the subway graffiti era from 1977-1983, and was affiliated with MTA writing crews such as TSS (The Super Squad), RTW (Rolling Thunder Writers), and MAFIA (Masters Administration for Incredible Artists). Gasparro is the original KR.ONE, not to be confused with KR of Krink, Inc. As of late he has been mistakenly referred to as OG KR, Original Gangster KR, which is a name he denies affiliation with and finds to be unrepresentative.
So, who is KR.ONE?
KR.One considers himself a true rock-and-roller, as opposed to a hip-hop cat, and has been playing the drums and guitar since 1982. His work blends cartoon imagery and cliché in an eclectic “kolorstorm”, expressing his inner spirit through his art. Louie KR.ONE Gasparro celebrates life through creativity. A musician, visual artist, and now author, Gasparro will be releasing his first book later this year, Don 1: The King From Queens. The book will present the life story of legendary graffiti writer DON 1 MAFIA who was a great influence on KR.ONE and the early graffiti scene of NYC.
His newest solo show, The Kolorstorm Art of Louie KR.ONE. Gasparro follows his two highly successful shows at Long Island City’s C.A.W.S. Gallery in 2012: Bringer of the Kolorstorm and A Fistful of Stars. Head over to 5Pointz Gallery in Long Island City on Sunday June 9th to meet the artist, enjoy his work, and experience a part of NYC graffiti history.
