Soze Gallery presents “Best Kept Secret,” the solo exhibition of widely recognized U.K. artist, Dale vN Marshall. The paintings are a collection of works on canvas and paper. Marshall’s name has gained recognition in art circles due to his sold out shows in the U.K. His works are featured in private collections worldwide.
Well over 20 years ago, Marshall started his career with spray paint, covering the streets of England as a young graffiti artist. Today, building from graffiti text and his unfortunate encounter with one of the U.K.’s oldest asylum’s, a mature Marshall visually tells the story of his on-going battles of mental health through the medium of oil paint. Educated at a graduate level at one of Southern California’s finest art schools, Marshall understands abstraction’s ability to bring the private into a public space.
The aesthetics of the work is inspired by the period of impressionism and documents a year-long residence in Southern California. The “Best Kept Secret” features works of raw originality with distinct sophistication. Some works include overhead views of Los Angeles painted from memory. Others are works on paper, such as the highly regarded “To stitch some old wounds” series. The compositions contain text that is constructed then deconstructed.
Influences of the late Twombly and the late Californian master Diebenkorn are seen. The moment is here to see this stunning collection of original small and large format works at Soze Gallery. Marshall will soon return to the UK to prepare for an October exhibition in central London. Soon to follow will be his long awaited 3 month solo show at a prestigious UK museum.
The poet Rene Ricard once said- ‘No one wants to miss the next Van Gogh’. Indeed, Marshall has the qualities as the quissessential living artist, a self-described rock ‘n’ roll painter. Through his passion for paint and heartfelt story Marshall shares his contrasting pain and happiness with superb dedication to his art practice.
‘Best Kept Secret’ is the humble title for our show on the 29th May at Soze Gallery starting at 7pm in DTLA
