Preview: Kingbrown Magazine Issue 09

By - Friday, June 28th, 2013

Set for a July, 2013 release, Issue 09 of King Brown is looking like another well crafted publication. Co-curated by Brad Eastman, Marty Routledge and Numskull a collective project out of Sydney known as The Hours, Ian Mutch and The Yok have again, put out a quality product covering photography, illustration, urban skateboard art and design. With the last release party taking over Klughaus Gallery with an exhibition, skate competition and live painting by Mike Giant, the upcoming release in July should be another whiskey infused night to remember. Handcrafted and sewn inside its customary brown paper bag, Issue 09 features silk-screen designs by Toy Machine skate board company founder Ed Templeton and UNGA of the Broken Fingaz Crew. While I don’t want to spoil the surprise with pictures before the release, I can say that the inside photo spreads are a great collection of images that words alone are insufficient but I thought I would give you a few idea of what to expect anyhow. Dabs & Myla lay out burners on both sides of an adjoining corner with the words Rap Nation wrapped around the intersection giving a great perspective of the red, yellow, green and blue fades through their names. Commingling a character from each of the four members throughout the crew name above, the Broken Fingaz Crew mural is a top to bottom production with that ripped up comic book feel. On top of a few flicks of freight train pieces by Vans the Omega, the issue is packed with features on Ed Templeton, founder of Toy Machine, UNGA, Nychos, Hushmitnavn, Ghostpatrol and Ozzie Wright. Included with your essential reading is the usual Kingbrown care package with this release containing a Dabs & Myla vinyl slap suitable for outdoor use and a Kingbrown x Ironlak beer coozi, perfect for your roof-top gatherings. So go check out the shop for back issues while we wait to hear where the NYC release party will be held. To hold you over till then, check out my favorite stop motion production by TANT & UNGA.
