R.I.P. – Sean Price Tribute Mural by Meres One

By - Wednesday, August 12th, 2015

The Hip-Hop community has been known for showing love and support during times of hardship. The The past couple days they have come together to give their condolences to Brooklyn rapper Sean Price, who passed away last Saturday. Price was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn on March 17, 1972, and claimed to be the best rapper from the neighborhood. Price reached prominence in the mid- ’90s with fellow rapper Jahmal “Rock” Bush when they formed the rap group Heltah Skeltah. Their 1996 album “Nocturnal” is considered a classic Hip-Hop album. Price also released three solo albums, and was planning to release a new album “Songs In the Key of Price” later this month.

A day after Price’s death the legendary former 5 Pointz curator Meres One created a mural in Crown Heights to commemorate the rapper. The Gothamist was there to cover the story and took these wonderful pictures of Meres One crafting the mural. Meres One had a personal connection to Price and told The Gothamist that Price and other members of his label Duck Down Music would frequent 5 Pointz. For Meres One, creating a mural was the perfect way to honor Price:

“When I ran 5 Pointz, it was amazing to meet all of the pioneers that I grew up admiring and listening, and the fact that they came to something that I created–I can’t think of anything better. So to me, this is like payback, especially to him,” Meres said. He added, “I’m not going to change it. He has a permanent home here.”

Meres One has been very active and keeping the tradition of 5 Pointz alive long after it’s unfortunate demise. Last May, Meres One and the 5 Pointz team helped transform August Martin High School in Jamaica, Queens into a graffiti mecca. This latest project is not only keeping the tradition of 5 Pointz alive but New York City Hip-Hop as well by immortalizing one of its best rappers. 12oz would like to give their condolences to the Price family and give a big shout out to Meres One for making this mural. Duck Down Music has organized a fundraiser to help assist Price’s family during this difficult time. You can donate to this fundraiser by clicking here
