Recap: Ricky vs. Dwels at Camaradas El Barrio

By - Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Monday evening Ricky Powell and Brian Dwels kicked the new year off in style, with the opening of the “The Rickster Vs. Dwels” art show at Camaradas El Barrio in Spanish Harlem. The show was just the latest collaboration between these two, Ricky the legendary NYC Photographer and Brian the photographer/ graffiti writer. The show featured some of Powell’s and Dwels’ most famous and infamous photographs, reinterpreted by several artist using the photographs as a canvas and bringing a new meaning and life to each. Dwels himself did a piece on Powell’s iconic photo of old school Hip Hop king Big Daddy Kane. Other artist featured included Reds, Ian Johnson and the host of the “The Kings Court” Boots 119. Ricky was the life of the party as usual as he signed copies of his “Bug Out” issue of Frank 151, which also sponsored the show and the issue features much of the art included in the show. Tats Cru, Tuff City, Ces and TKid were also in the house. Overall it was great show and a great night of NYC Hip Hop culture topped off with the after party, with non other than the B-Ball legend and superstar D.J. Bobbito Garcia on the wheels of steel. If you missed the opening sorry, but head on up to Camaradas and check it out! Text and Photo: Leonard Swann
