Recap: SEEN “Old New York” at Buckshot Gallery in Santa Monica, CA.
This passed weekend, Buckshot Gallery in Santa Monica opened a new exhibition dubbed “Old New York” featuring unseen work from the Godfather of Graffiti, SEEN. For this show, SEEN combines graffiti with abstraction to create a vibrantly colored angular world that both captivated his audience and challenged their perspective of his work.
Despite the name of the exhibition, SEEN’s main source of inspiration for “Old New York” came from an influential period he spent in Paris. He stepped outside the traditional lettering of graffiti and created deconstructed abstract pieces. SEEN employed a variety of techniques and used unconventional materials such as metal frames from Parisian roof tops. “Old New York” also contains recent pieces that feature SEEN’s legendary free-hand style. The two different styles exhibited together show SEEN’s origins and his evolution as an artist.
“Old New York” runs through March 12, 2016.
