RECAP: The Z Garage – Detroit

By - Friday, April 18th, 2014

The Z parking and retail development was created by Bedrock, a QuickenLoans company and its founder Dan Gilbert. The Structure stands 10 floors and 535,000 square feet, located in the center of downtown Detroit. Gilbert, Library Street Collective, Bedrock and over two dozen international artists came together to create the biggest contemporary art project of 2013. The project spanned over three months where artists would come in groups of two or three and work on their designated floor. Each artist was given one large wall and an entrance way on each floor to create a unique mural. From the middle of summer until the end of December the artists worked at least a full week on each of their pieces. The project was intended for people to see art and a parking garage in a whole new way, who wants to see another boring garage erected. Ever since it opened in December of 2013, art enthusiasts come from all around to walk the garage and check out the amazing art, and that is the cool thing about it, that it is encouraged to walk the garage to look at art. Just to add, there is security present that patrols the garage.
The project consisted of some of todays best international artists such as Augustine Kofie, B, Cyrcle, DabsMyla, GAIA, Hense, HowNosm, Interesni Kazki, Logan Hicks, Lucy McLauchlan, Matt W. Moore, Maya Hayuk, Mr. Jago, PUSH, Remi Rough, Revok, Pose, Reyes, Sam Friedman, Saner, Smash137, Tristan Eaton and WAIS. The project was followed up with an opening at Library Street showcasing works from all of these talented artists. So if you are ever in Detroit come check out Library Street Collective Gallery and The Z Garage which is right behind the gallery itself.
