Last Friday, Ricky Powell kicked off his latest photo exhibit, “Oh No He Didn’t!” at the Klughaus Gallery. In collaboration with Memes NYC, Ricky displayed some old favorites as well as a handful of new photographs to the public. A limited run of Powell t-shirts were also made by Memes, featuring a young Basquiat shot by The Funky Uncle in the summer of 1986.
Ricky’s photos pay homage to the old New York, capturing the personalities of those who have made their mark on NYC culture. From the golden era of hip hop (Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Salt-n-Pepa) to the art world (Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat) to sports (Mike Tyson), Powell has shared imagery with us that’s grown to become iconic over the years. Friends and family came through in the summer heat to show their support, and it wasn’t long before the party overflowed out onto Monroe Street. Thankfully, Ricky returned to his show unscathed after a run-in with NYPD.
Be sure to check out Ricky’s exhibit, running now through July 14th at Klughaus!
