Sacha Jenkins Teams Up with Murs and Darryl Jenifer from Bad Brains to form The White Mandingos
Sacha Jenkins was in the news last week as the moderator of the conversation with DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia at the New Museum. An unsurprising role for him considering his depth of experience and expertise in hop hop culture as the founder of Ego Trip, having helped produce television shows for VH1, and as co-author of the Piece Book series along with 12ozProphet blogger Chino BYI.
However Sacha Jenkins’ latest venture caught us by surprise, partnering with Los Angeles rapper Murs and Darryl Jenifer from Bad Brains to form the White Mandingos, a new group that combines the sounds of rap and gritty punk. They just released their first single, “The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me,” with a forthcoming music video shot by Jason Goldwatch. “This band came together the way Henry Rollins-era Black Flag came together, only Murs is from the West Coast and me and Darryl are from the East Coast,” Jenkins told Rolling Stone. “Being that we all hail from different parts of the country, we’re definitely in a great position to talk how the ghetto might be trying to kill us.”
In a previous interview with Mass Appeal, Darryl Jenifer the Bad Brains bassist said, “The White Mandingos is the most fun I’ve had collaborating in years. We really had a great time creating this project. The storyline is dope, the beats are zany and unpredictable from song to song, and the riffs are pure and performed with no real focus other than getting your rock on, which is the way it should be. The White Mandingos is the new shit for the ages. I can’t wait to get it out.”
“The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me” is on the White Mandingos’ album by the same name, scheduled to drop June 11th on Fat Beats.
