Shepard Fairey, GILF!, Swoon and many more artists auction work to support Young New Yorkers
On Wednesday, April 1st art lovers will have the opportunity to bid on artwork from celebrated artists, including COPE2, ICY and SOT, CERN, LMNOPI and many more while helping support the Young New Yorkers organization.
Founded a couple years ago by Rachel Barnard and with support from The Brooklyn Defenders, Young New Yorkers is an arts program for 16 and 17-year-olds who have open misdemeanor cases. New York city criminal courts give eligible youth the option of participating in Young New Yorkers instead of facing jail time and the burden that comes with having a criminal record. With New York and North Carolina being the last two states to prosecute 16 and 17-year-olds as adults, the Young New Yorkers program is an important avenue for youth to voice their collective experiences with the New York criminal justice system. Through a series of workshops, participants create community specific art installations with positive social messages of their choice. To prepare the participants for their final projects, Young New Yorkers invite local artists to teach and assist. Past teaching artists have included Lunar New Year, ASVP, Rudie as well as 12oz friend and blogger, Dave Chino Villorente.
