Throwback Jam of the Week: The Pharcyde – Drop

By - Thursday, June 27th, 2013

The years between 1986 and 1997 were a special time for hip hop. The genre began to identify itself more as an art form with the rise new, creative styles of production, and the expanding talent and abilities of the MC. Hip hop developed subgenres within its self and could no longer be generalized into one group. One such subgenre was alternative hip hop, championed by groups like De La Soul and the Pharcyde. “Drop” is recognized as one of the Pharcyde’s most popular songs off of their second album Labcabincalifornia. The video, which was directed by Spike Jonze, is impressive to say the least and will leave you mind boggled as to how they pulled it off. That being said, the visuals perfectly fit the spiraling nature of the song’s beat, as well as the quirky elements of the group that made the Pharcyde one of the best.
