Rizzoli Upcoming Release 'City as Canvas'

By - Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

City as Canvas, authored by Carlo McCormick, Sean Corcoran, Sacha Jenkins, Christopher “Daze” Ellis and Lee Quinones is a catalog of the artworks procured by Martin Wong. Both an artist and an enthusiast for philanthropy in the streets, Wong had a tailored eye and amassed a collection from those he coveted during New York City’s art scene in the 70’s and 80’s. His acquisitions included photographs, black books, letters, postcards, posters, and originals by various artists. Futura 2000, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Lady Pink, Keith Haring are few of many of the influential contributions Wong had obtained. Wong’s locale, instinctual finger on the pulse of what was happening and close relationships within the community led to a collection that provides insight into a sub culture in its very beginnings. Understanding the importance of the work, Martin donated his dedicated acquisitions to the Museum of the City of New York in 1994 before his passing away shortly after. City as Canvas published by Rizzoli Press will be available on October 31st, 2013 and an exhibition of the same name will open shortly after.
