Recap: "Urban Legends" Public Art Exhibition And Auction

The “Urban Legends” Public Art Exhibition opened this last Friday April 27th at the LA Mart Art and Design Space in Los Angeles. The group show consisted of over 50 first class established and up and coming artists representative of graffiti and street art culture. In addition to the incredible amount of works on display, opening night also played host to a live public art auction, the first of its kind in Los Angeles as well as a rewards reception for four individuals who are regarded as having significantly benefited the cities public art movement. Tempt One (aka the “Eye Writer”) the legendary Los Angeles graffiti artist was amongst those awarded, as well as Kent Twitchell, the co founder of the LA Mural Conservancy. Eriberto and Estevan Oriol, Mear One, Defer K2S, Vogue TDK, Chor Boogie and Woier K2S were amongst the abounding roll call of seriously dope artists who were not only present but also featured in the exhibition. Continue onto page 2 for more exclusive photos of some of the dope art that was featured in the exhibition… {pagebreak} The works displayed incorporated photography, sculpture, print, and also more traditional mural type works; large scale abstractions placed indoors and out of their element in a wing on the 12th floor of the building that is also known for hosting the first edition of Art Platform back in 2011. Many of the more traditional large-scale graffiti pieces were from the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle and of artists who have participated in the event over its five-year history. Some of the notable artists showing works from the Estria Graffiti Battle included Vyal, Dizney, Saner and many others. Furthermore the amazing Martha Cooper, highly acclaimed for her work as a graffiti documentarian in NYC was also featured in the exhibition along side LA’s own Estevan Oriol and his father Eriberto. The “Urban Legends” Public Art Exhibition will be open to the public on select day through May 26th, they will also be scheduling artists talks and other events in the space during this time that will further promote the show.
