Vault by Vans x WTAPS Original Classics
Dopeness is about to drop on September 12th. Vault by Vans x WTAPS have teamed up to rework an assortment of Vans original classics.
Deeply rooted in a philosophy derived from Japanese master craftsman, WTAPS takes an approach to aesthetics that strives to recognize the essence of the items that comprise the material world and realize their hidden potential. The Vault by Vans x WTAPS project takes shape on iconic footwear silhouettes in their truest forms – their original forms. Vans Original Classics are rebuilt from the ground up using the same design specifications as their first size runs, featuring the same fit, padding density, width, foxing height from decades ago.
The history of WTAPS begins in 1993. Tetsu Nishiyama, known simply as Tet, established the brand 40% Against Rights. In 1996, Tet re-emerged with a new line, WTAPS (pronounced Double Taps), primarily influenced by military stylings and the outdoors. Tet was the creative director for Black Flag, an apparel shop in Aoyama, Tokyo. WTAPS products are designed according to the philosophy of traditional Japanese carpenters called ‘Miya-Daiku,’ highly skilled workers known for making full use of each piece of wood used.
The collaboration includes a trio of OG Era LX color ways, inspired by the Japanese school uniform and “uwabaki” concept. The OG Sk8-Hi LX is brought forth in a set of materials and tones that channel the vintage styling of another iconic Vans silhouette, the Vans Caballero. A favorite sneaker of WTAPS Founder Tetsu “Tet” Nishiyama, the Vans Caballero debuted in 1989 as skate legend Steve Caballero’s signature shoe featuring embossed reptile nubuck and durable suede reinforcements. This material build can be seen once again on the OG Sk8-Hi LX in grey/black and all-black styles. The last silhouette in the line-up, the OG Style 36 LX, was created with unity in mind. Taking one hue to all parts of the shoe, the OG Style 36 LX introduces black/black, navy/navy and burgundy/burgundy versions of itself in the Vault by Vans x WTAPS collection.
The Vault by Vans x WTAPS collection releases globally at select retailers on September 12, 2015.
